Science and Us 2020 Makeathon Workshop

On January 27th we had the pleasure of participating in the Science & Us 2020 Makeathon, an event where 50 high schoolers came together to make projects about science-related topics. Held at MIT’s Stata Center, the event was entirely conceived and led by students, for students, to explore and promote aspects of science communication.

The focus of this year’s gathering was science and art.

Brett was invited by the student-led group to give an hour-long workshop on anatomy for artists, as well as serve on an expert panel discussion and judge the students’ final art projects.

Science and Us Founder, Kattherine Huang, gives a TED Talk on science communication

Science and Us is not trying to promote what many people refer to as STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Instead, I want to take a step beyond that. Instead of crossing the boundaries that divide fields, I want to eliminate those boundaries.
— Katherine Huang, Science and Us Founder

It was truly inspiring to see these young students teaching and motivating each other to engage in scientific communication and art. Students created a wide array of creative projects, ranging from a competitive card game to teach microbiology, to satirical newscasts outlining the dangers of infectious diseases.

We look forward to participating in future Science & Us events!
